Compton Bay, Waiting

neil williams

Strangely, having never surfed and growing up far from the sea in Scotland, I grew up with posters of bronzed surfers in shorts riding monstrous beautiful blue Hawaiian tubes on my bedroom walls.

New to surfing, and living on the Isle of Wight, I find it a quite different experience. Its attraction is not that of the glossy magazine pictures. It's often cold, sometimes brutal. Here sunshine and waves rarely coincide. For me, this peaceful picture of six solitary surfers hooded in the fog in February, waiting patiently for a wave to rise up from the gloom, captures its appeal better. This is more what surfing feels like. Waiting, with nothing to worry about but the next wave.
