Map of The Moon
Map of The Moon
Years ago I was falling asleep in a camper van on the North West Coast of Scotland. I remember it was cold, and as I dozed off listening to Radio 4 on longwave, a voice read out a list of all the place names on the Moon. " The Bay of Rainbows, The Sea of Serenity, The Marsh of Sleep...." It was very poetic, and some 25 years later the experience resulted in this painting.
The picture itself began as a tracing of a NASA image, which I then turned into a watercolour painting. ( I did look at buying a crazy expensive telescopic lens, but figured NASA probably had it covered...) Next I photograph the painting, fix it up a bit in Photoshop, and then print the image on canvas, which is then varnished and left to dry for a few days..
Next.. more painting with silver on the moon, and all the areas are labelled by hand with a silver pen. And all the names are written, again in silver and by hand. It all takes a lot of love and care. I hope you like it.
HOW WE MAKE THE PICTURE
We build everything ourselves in the gallery. The photograph is printed on the very best archival matte canvas and then left flat to dry for a few days. The great thing about a matte finish with no glass is that you have no distracting glare or reflections. It's a much more direct experience.
Whilst the print is drying we can get on with making the stretcher frame and the tray frame that the finished canvas will drop into. The tray frame is then hand painted.
Next the canvas is stretched over the stretcher frame. After that, we carefully paint the canvas edges with several coats of the same paint used on the tray frame, so they match perfectly. Then we assemble the canvas and frame, put a hanging wire on the back. Finally Neil signs the piece front and back adding the title and edition number.
We use the very best materials, and I would expect my pictures to look exactly the same in 100 years. They won't fade in our lifetime.
