THE PHOTOGRAPH
The old West Pier remains in Brighton is an irresistible subject. This is a long exposure as the early morning light is just creeping into the sky.
For me this picture speaks of the futility of our dreams and ambitions when faced with the immensity of time and nature. ( I find this oddly comforting!) The West Pier always brings my mind a few lines of poetry recalled from school days..
HOW WE MAKE THE PICTURE
We build everything ourselves in the gallery. The photograph is printed on the very best archival matte canvas, hand coated in a matte varnish we import from America, and then left flat to dry for a few days. This means the picture can be cleaned with a damp cloth, and the great thing about a matte finish with no glass is that you have no distracting glare or reflections. It's a much more direct experience.
Whilst the print is drying we can get on with making the stretcher frame and the tray frame that the finished canvas will drop into. The tray frame is hand painted either white or grey depending on your order (for this image I like the white best).
Next the canvas is stretched over the stretcher frame. After that, we carefully paint the canvas edges with several coats of the same paint used on the tray frame, so the they match perfectly. Then we assemble the canvas and frame, put a hanging wire on the back, and attach a Certificate of Authenticity. Finally Neil signs the piece front and back adding the title and edition number.

THE PHOTOGRAPH
I've been entranced by the sea off St. Catherine's Point for years. The tide races through here, and on a big spring ebb when a Westerly Gale blows against it, the sea comes alive. It's like a crazy dance fight - the ocean against the wind - and I can watch it, and photograph it, for hours....

We use the very best materials, and I would expect my pictures to look exactly the same in 100 years. They won't fade in our lifetime.

THE PHOTOGRAPH
I love the Round The Island Race, and this year's race was a classic. Sunshine and a stiff breeze and around 1200 sailboats. I took this snap from the cliffs overlooking St. Catherine's Lighthouse om the Island's southern tip around midday. You can just see the Needles in the far distance.. Happy days.
