THE PHOTOGRAPH
I took this from the Newhaven Beach at the height of Storm Eunice. It’s a great place to photograph the sea in a storm and so, with my daughter Rosie for company, we jumped on the 5am ferry and drove down the coast. When high tide and the crazy winds combined with enough sunlight breaking through, it was time to edge as close to the action as I dared, and start snapping away..
When it's that wild, you set the camera settings once, hope you've got it right, and just shoot hundreds.. hoping later to find a few diamonds amongst the many blurry messes..
But when I retreated to the van, soaked to the skin, shivering, I found the camera hadn't been firing.. Noooo...I'd taken 11 shots, all rubbish.. I couldn't figure it out.. autofocus issues maybe...
The second attempt was worse. I couldn't stand properly, so again I half crawled down the shingle beach..and then Wow.. the sun broke through and the world exploded into a crazy beautiful chaos of light and noise and sea and light.. I was so excited firing shot after shot, trying to shelter the camera as well as I could from the salt spray whipping past me.. and then I looked at my camera.. nothing.. it was dead.. the sea had killed it.
I was gutted as I changed into dry clothes and we drove to Brighton to find a cafe to warm up. I thought I had nothing. We put the film into the laptop and found the camera had managed 3 photos before dieing, and this was the last one.. Poseidon (the God of the seas and of storms) takes and sometimes Poseidon gives...
HOW WE MAKE THE PICTURE
We build everything ourselves in the gallery. The photograph is printed on the very best archival matte canvas, hand coated in a matte varnish we import from America, and then left flat to dry for a few days. This means the picture can be cleaned with a damp cloth, and the great thing about a matte finish with no glass is that you have no distracting glare or reflections. It's a much more direct experience.
Whilst the print is drying we can get on with making the stretcher frame and the tray frame that the finished canvas will drop into. The tray frame is then hand painted.
Next the canvas is stretched over the stretcher frame. After that, we carefully paint the canvas edges with several coats of the same paint used on the tray frame, so they match perfectly. Then we assemble the canvas and frame, put a hanging wire on the back, and attach a Certificate of Authenticity. Finally Neil signs the piece front and back adding the title and edition number.
We use the very best materials, and I would expect my pictures to look exactly the same in 100 years. They won't fade in our lifetime.

This stunted oak forest, Wistman's Woods, is found high up in the heart of Dartmoor -a good 45 minute hike from the nearest road. To me this place feels to me like the remnants of a lost world... something left over from a time of druids and magic...

I've been entranced by the sea off St. Catherine's Point for years. The tide races through here, and on a big spring ebb when a Westerly Gale blows against it, the sea comes alive. It's like a crazy dance fight - the ocean against the wind - and I can watch it, and photograph it, for hours....

THE PHOTOGRAPH
This picture has been in my head for a while. It took three early morning trips up in my friend Mike's plane (doors removed!) before I finally got lucky with the light. We are flying in a crazy tight circles, me leaning out taking way too many pictures. The resulting image is a stitch of four photographs put together. The detail is great up close, though some of this is a little lost on the smaller size canvas.

THE PHOTOGRAPH
I took this picture during a winter storm from the beach in Newhaven, East Sussex. It was wild. I was running in and out of the surf on the steep shingle beach doing my best to dodge the waves, get some pictures, and not get pulled into the ocean. It was wild and fun, but not a great health and safety day.
Still, it's an amazing place to photograph the sea. Waves rebound off the huge sea wall that runs out to the lighthouse there, and clash with the incoming seas. The result is a crazy maelstrom of salt water, wind and noise. I love it.

THE PHOTOGRAPH
My favourite view of one of my favourite places in the world. Sutherland, on the wild North West coast of Scotland is just awesome. The photograph is taken looking out over Inverpolly from near the summit of Stac Pollaidh, one of Scotland's classic peaks, just as the sun dips into the Atlantic Ocean behind me. You can see the moon coming up in the top right of the picture. It was cold and crisp, with a dusting of snow on the hilltops. Heaven.
The full title of the picture, written in silver on the bottom left of the canvas, is Suilven, Quinag, Canisp, Cul Beag, Cul Mor and the Shadow of Stac Pollaidh.
The tray frame is hand painted.
Next the canvas is stretched over the stretcher frame. After that, we carefully paint the canvas edges with several coats of the same paint used on the tray frame, so the they match perfectly.

THE PAINTING
This is a view from the cliff tops near Blackgang Chine looking down on St. Catherine's lighthouse and the seemingly endless ocean beyond. The skies here seem really big.
I'll often take a morning run past this spot, and have photographed it many times, but never loved the result. I like it best when the sea and the sky and the earth all feel part of the same entity: shaped from the same clay so to speak.
I'm not explaining this well, but sometimes when it's misty and the light is low, it's hard to tell where the earth turns into air and the sea turns into sky. For some reason this makes me happy. This, I think, is what this picture is about.
It's a pencil sketch and a big messy watercolour which I've then brought into photoshop and completely reworked. I like it, and I hope it pleases you too.

THE PHOTOGRAPH
The most iconic lighthouse in the world? Perhaps.
But getting out to photograph it on a February morning isn't easy. I had a few weeks in Ireland with my camera, and this was at the top of the list. (I'm working on a Black and White photography book "The Shipping Forecast", and there was no way this book can go to press with out a shot of the Fastnet Rock and Lighthouse).
Any way, a dozen phone calls to charter a power boat, yacht, fishing boat - anything- and I was getting nowhere. So I drove the five hours to the nearest harbour Baltimore, a beautiful spot a long way from anywhere at the southern tip of Ireland only to find all of the boats lifted out of the sea for the winter. Nooo...
All, that is, except one well used little fishing boat bobbing bravely away. It turned out this belonged to the local bar and hotel owner Youen Jacob. He wasn't hard to track down, and a couple pints later this brilliant man, out of the goodness of his heart and taking pity on a fellow photographer, had agreed to drag himself out of bed at 5am on a winter morning and run me out into the cold Atlantic ocean for a dawn photo shoot of the Fastnet Lighthouse. What a man!
It was drizzling as we set out, but dolphins kept us company and the sea was kind. And finally the sun broke through...Wow. Thank you Youen.

THE ART
Six O'clock most mornings you'll find me sitting in my garden in Ventnor overlooking the sea, a mug of black coffee in my hands. For company I have the local tribe of Jackdaws.
Like clockwork, summer and winter, shortly after six am they make their rounds: two or three always clockwise circuits cutting across my garden. They babble excitedly in their squeaky quack chatter and make me smile. I wish I spoke Jackdaw!
This picture began life as a messy watercolour with pen and ink birds, which I've then brought into photoshop and reworked. I like it and hope you do to!

THE PAINTING
I dream of seeing this - the return of whales to the waters around the Isle of Wight. Not so long ago, in the lives of our great grandparents, whales were a common sight and were even hunted in the Solent.
In the painting I've imagined a Fin Whale breaching with the Needles lighthouse behind. Lit by a crescent moon, you can also make out St. Catherine's and Hurst Lighthouses in the background.
The picture began life as a big messy watercolour, which I then rework in photoshop.
In 2016, after an absence of 25 years, dolphins returned to the island, and living in Ventnor it makes me happy seeing them every summer. Large whales are being seen again more frequently off Cornwall now, with occasional sightings off the South Devon coast just 100 miles away.
How great would it be if we could look after our seas just that little bit better and allow the whales to return? One day we might take our kids on a whale watching trip out of Cowes....
